Unfortunately, 2016 is not the year in which you are going to make a career change, despite the fact that it is a new year and 2015 was just sort of blah…
Here’s why.
The first thing you need before you create change in your life is a sense of discontent with the present.
This discontent usually takes the form of:
- Lists and lists of irritations
- Unfulfilled dreams
- Recognition of missed opportunities
Now, I know what you’re thinking, I’m discontent with my current job. Whether it is because you feel undervalued, office politics are driving you insane, or because your peers are jerks, you have plenty of discontent.
Further, you know you have unfulfilled dreams and you’ve probably thought about missed opportunities. But I’m willing to guess this was the case in December of 2014 too, and you didn’t do much about it.
The second thing you need to create change in your life is a vision of the future. A vision that inspires you, that motivates you, that leaves you excited.
Most people don’t have a motivating vision of the future. For many people, a similar job with another firm is their vision of the future… and that probably isn’t a motivating one.
Here’s where a career coach can help you. By helping you craft a clear, motivating vision of the future, a career coach can help turn that discontent into action.
Now, let’s say you are discontent and you’ve got an exciting vision of the future. Many, many people will stay there in the “daydreaming” phase. It’s nice to daydream about that future and put it off until someday.
Unfortunately, someday isn’t coming. It isn’t coming unless you take action to develop the skills and do the things necessary to make your vision a reality.
As I tell my prospective career coaching clients, don’t hire me until you are ready to commit to taking action.
For many, working with a career coach represents a new level of commitment to making their goals real.
So, what happens when you work with a career coach after you’ve created a vision of the future? Well, from there it is all about creating an action plan for making the vision reality.
Developing critical skills, meeting the right people, overcoming fears and taking action are all elements of a plan to succeed in making that motivating future tangible.
A career coach can help you do that.
So, if you are thinking that maybe 2016 is the year that you stop being discontent and daydreaming about a vague better future, take the first step by scheduling a complimentary coaching session and let’s see if we can make 2016 an unbelievable year for you.
